Avoiding Vision Problems for Bloggers

Do you know that as bloggers, we are prone to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)?

CVS occurs when there’s a shortening of tear break up time (or in other words, your tears start to dry up). Prolong exposure and looking at the monitor causes your tears to evaporate faster and your eyes to dry up.

CVS can lead to various eye problems like eye strain, dry eyes and vision related headaches. Here are some tips that will help prevent these problems:

  1. Keep your monitor at least 25 inches away from you, tilted a little below eye level.
  2. Use LCD or plasma monitors (as opposed to cathode ray tube monitors) because they are more soothing.
  3. Make sure to set the lighting and brightness of your monitor to a lower glare, depending on your comfort level.
  4. Use an antiglare screen on your monitor.
  5. Take regular visual breaks lasting few minutes, at intervals of 20 minutes when using your computer. You can look away from the screen for about a minute to rest your eyes for a while before going back again to your work.
  6. Blink your eyes several times to prevent them from drying up. Blinking causes tears which will nourish your eyes.

If you feel that you are putting strain on your eyes, be sure to take a break. A clear vision is a great asset. Eyeglasses can help you see clearly when you already lost your 20/20 vision but if you can help it, try to save your eyes/vision.
